LNC Dessert House

June 19, 2009

After our birthday blogger invasion at Wagaya, most of our guests left fed and fulfilled (or so I imagined). Untiltherewerefive. You would think dinner was enough for us but oh no, before long we were already hunting for more food! Yep, even after the Japanese dinner feast (that I clearly didn’t eat enough of!), our thoughts already turned to where to eat next because there’s no doing things by halves with us.

Mango Lychee and Mini Sticky Balls with Mango Gelato

Red Bean Soup with Sticky Rice Balls

So with our things loaded up in the car we set off into the night of Chinatown in search of something…anything…to eat. Helen mentioned a new dessert house on Sussex Street a little further away from Chinatown and I remembered driving by it numerous times.

Black Sesame Slush with Macha Gelato and Red Beans

LNC Dessert House is perfect for those who are a fan of the colourful and wacky Asian desserts. Indeed the store fit-out is bright, cartoony, whimsical, fun and delectably childish. Bright red tables, a splash of white and lime green, and a rainbow assortment of gelatos complete with an anime girl mascot brandishing the oh-so-Asian peace sign as a greeting.

I admit I was a little hard-pressed with deciding what to have because one, I wanted something savoury and two, I don’t really eat these kind of desserts. LNC Dessert House did offer the Malaysian dessert, Ice Kacang (which I love) but I decided against it as it looked bizarrely unauthentic. Bizarre, as in there were about 100 colourful condiments too many.

Coffee and Chocolate Gelato with Longans

Instead I played it safe and made my own sundae of coffee and chocolate gelato with a handful of longans. Normally I find chocolate or coffee gelatos watered down in flavour but surprisingly Dessert House’s was quite rich and creamy. Letting it melt over your tongue while you’re crunching away on longans is pleasure incarnate.

Papaya with white fungus and lotus seed dessert

Curry fish balls (pretty much the ony savoury offering at night along with chicken wings)

Opened seven days till late, this place is a haven for those who are inclined for the immensely colourful Chinese desserts. For those who aren’t, fear not as there are gelatos in bog standard flavours as well as fruit smoothies, juices, coffee and Pearl Milk Teas. I can only imagine how popular this place is going to be come summer!

Now the question is, does anybody know what ‘LNC’ stands for?

“Late Night Chinese” Dessert House?
“Let's Not Criticise” Dessert House?

Did you try one of the curry balls? How did they end up tastings, if you did?

How funny! I walked past this place a while back but it was too cold to even contemplate one of those iced desserts. Good to hear that the ice cream was good!

Hi Simon – we can try guess till the cows come home but we'll never know…until I ask them next time that is! The curry balls were actually quite alright – a bit too spicy for my liking but.

Hi Lorraine – Yeah it seems a bit crazy to have ice cream in this winter but they do have a range of hot desserts.
