Cupcakes on Pitt - Parramatta

I confess I've always remained at arms length with the cupcake, never quite embracing the chic retail trend that has spawned out of it. My theory was always why buy it when you can make it…cheaper and usually better?

I thought the whole cupcake fad was dying a slow death, but it seems
Cupcakes on Pitt just keeps branching out. This time they've intercepted the suburbs with a store in Parramatta Westfied. I’ve never tried it before (as with many other retail cupcakeries) mainly because I don’t exactly live next door to Sydney CBD but with the migration over to the ‘burbs, what better time to start?

And in case you were wondering, yes the bad photos were taken with my old point-and-shoot camera. This post was long overdue and please know, that I'm not proud of my tardiness.

It lies on the bottom level between
Parramatta Westfield and the train station. There are no signage out front and you wouldn't know it was the store itself unless you were standing in front of it. There are only a few lonely bar stools and no tables so takeaway is the way to go here. No doubt this will prove popular with scurrying suits and students.

Being the end of the day, there was a limited choice in flavours. The cupcakes were perfectly sized at a reasonable $2 each - perfect for mass flavour consumption! I purchased half a dozen, all of which sat very snugly in the cute-as-pie carry box that received a bit of attention from curious shoppers as I was gallivanting through Westfield.

Unfortunately the girl who served me walked into the counter and sandwiched my box between her and the hard surface, resulting in a little carnage and some cross transference of frosting between cupcakes.

Vanilla Sundae

A vanilla cupcake topped with butter icing and strawberry frosting. A good vanilla cupcake is the heart of any cupcake bakery – and
Cupcakes on Pitt failed on this account with a bland and dry cake. My tips for delectable store-bought vanilla cupcakes? Check out My Little Cupcake in Neutral Bay or The Biscuit Tree at Epping Twilight Markets.

Blueberry Cupcake

Unfortunately my hopes for blueberry goodness were dashed. I suspect the use of fake flavouring as this cupcake tasted strongly like strange bubblegum. One bite was enough for me to pass it off to Mr S.

Passionfruit Cupcake

Pretty but with no hint of passionfruit flavour in the cake or icing. At this stage my sugar craving remained unsatiated and my mood was getting crabbier by the minute.

Dark Chocolate Cupcake

The best one out of the lot mainly because it was actually chocolate! The flavour was great but again the cake was dry and every bite disintegrated in my mouth like sand. To give them the benefit of the doubt, I’ll have to try these again in the morning when they’re more freshly baked.

Peanut Butter Cupcake

Essentially these were the exact same chocolate cupcake and chocolate frosting except for two small dollops of peanut butter icing, which was complete goodness. I don't get it:
why not just cover the entire cupcake with peanut butter icing?

Jaffa Cupcake

Unfortunately the namesake only applies to the Jaffa candies on the cupcake, that was neither remotely chocolate or orange.

A bland vanilla cupcake was probably an ominous sign for my Cupcakes on Pitt experience. A passionfruit cupcake that doesn't taste anything like passionfruit was well, the coup de grĂ¢ce on my disappointing cupcake afternoon.

Of course I'd love to be proven wrong so if anybody know of any cupcake bakeries in Sydney that do it much better than
Cupcakes On Pitt (other than My Little Cupcake) tell me, tell me! Also, since this visit was a while ago, if things have improved then let me know and I'd be happy to revisit and re-review.

The cupcakes are pretty but I too found them underwhelming with the feeling I could do much better baking up a batch myself. If you do have a cupcake craving while in the city I quite like the new-ish place at the Ivy building on George St. They do a nice red velvet which is really hard to find in Sydney!

tummyrumble.net

that's interesting because I've always found cupcakes on pitt to be much better in taste than all the others. Friday night I noticed a new one on York st, and got a sundae, peanut butter, black forest and lemon meringue. The peanut butter looked much nicer than yours as the peanuts were all caramelised with toffee..but yes the cake was plain. And the black forest was plain chocolate with cherry on top. Lemon Meringue my face though...

shez

oh yes. i'm not a big cupcake place f an but the lemon meringue from cupcakes on pitt is rather the standout. we were always battling for it at birthday times...

Belle@Ooh, Look

I thought cupcakes were on the wane as well, but Cupcake Bakery still seems popular. Shame they always look better than they taste!

Stephcookie

I had the exact same reaction to the passionfruit cupcakes that you had...it didn't taste of anything really! But I do like their strawberry cupcakes. They also seem to be opening up a store in Chatswood soon too!

FFichiban

Cupcakes on Pitt used to be so much better when they were a decent size but now they are tiny but still charging the same price :( booo

Lorraine @NotQuiteNigella

Wow, $2 is a steal. I agree why buy it if you can make it but for $2 it makes the decision to buy easier. I tried them when they had the full cupcake and I wasn't particularly taken with the icing which tasted strangely chemically!

Jo

Wow, these cupcakes look gorgeous and I am sure they were equally yummy!

Yas

Woo cupcakes on pitt!
I think they used to be better before. It was disappointingly dry the last time I bought some :( But I go "Wooo pretty cupcakes!" every time I pass by!

Simon

I never got the whole fancy cupcake thing and judging from your review, I won't be getting these ones either.

Didn't realise Biscuit Tree did cupcakes.

Sarah

I recommend Sparkle Cupcakery on foveuax (near crown). Best cupcakes in sydney i think, not as pretty, but moist and delicious!

Alannah

I recommend Crewz Cafe in Pyrmont. They have just introduced cupcakes and they are amazing and will keep you coming back for more. They are $3 which I think is a bargain. I loved their choc fudge, banana banoffi, lemon meringue and cherry ripe. Their cakes are very moist YUM! It's 139 Harris Street Pyrmont near Union Square.

Hi Lisa - Ooh are you talking about The Cupcake Bakery? I saw red velvet at their QVB branch but have yet to try it!

Hi tummyrumble - yeah, don't you wish they would impart the flavours into the cakes themselves rather than just the icing?

Hi Shez - oh I've yet to try lemon meringue!

Hi Belle - my thoughts exactly. Now if we could get our tasty homemade ones to look like the pretty store ones then we have ourselves the perfect cupcake!

Hi Stephcookie - haha they're popping up everywhere aren't they?

Hi FFichiban - oh I didn't know that :) Boo indeed!

Hi Lorraine - yeah sometimes it's a little too easy to get lazy and buy instant instead of making it. Chemical icing? Travesty!

Hi Jo - gorgeous indeed. Taste? Not so much.

Hi Yas - hehe yeah I can't help but be lured by a pretty cupcake myself. Too bad they don't taste as good as they look!

Hi Simon - The Biscuit Tree only sells cupcakes at Epping Markets I believe. You'll have to confirm with Suze :)

Fancy cupcake thing? Hehe maybe it's a gender thing!

Hi Sarah - thx for the tip. Will keep an eye out for it!

Hi Alannah - thanks for the recommendation. It's on my list :)

Hi I too have been disappointed with the Cupcake Bakery. I bought some for a special occasion and they were so bad I took them back the next day!! I was so disgusted.

I have found another place through its at Pyrmont called Crewz Cafe, its on Harris St. They make there own and they are they are great!! Really moist, toppings are great and the actual cake tastes fantastic too. Usually i get to the base and only eat half but these ones are worth eating.

We went to the Pyrmont Art festival and they were handing samples out, thats how I found them. They should advertise, they would do so well.
