San Churro Chocolateria - Chatswood

I know I probably sound like a broken record here, but I love all things Spanish - the country, the men and the food! It’s the food that has rendered me forever rapturous particularly their sweets and desserts.

Doughnuts and chocolate: is there a more perfect dessert worthy of some Homer-esque salivation? Churros are Spanish doughnuts that are usually sold in cafes or off street vendors (which I enjoyed in Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast). I adore these piped serpentines of deep fried indulgence, and its trademark ridges are perfect for dipping into the melted chocolate. They have a slightly crunchy consistency and normally are sprinkled or rolled in sugar and cinnamon.

San Churro Chocolateria is located in Chatswood, Miranda and Glebe, which are about two light years away from where I live. But luckily I had to be Chatswood that day so there was no hesitation in heading to San Churro for a fix. It’s always nicer to sit down to a plate of churros that I didn’t have to make myself! And with a branch opening soon in Parramatta, I'll soon get to do that more often!

I couldn't help but stare at that colour!
I would love that shade of orange on my walls

Located next to Myers at Chatswood Westfield, San Churro is a small quaint corner shop of sugar-infested goodies.

Mr S. ordered an
Ice Chocolate, which was a disappointment. The sweetness was there but the richness and depth of chocolate was missing. I suspected the use of chocolate powder and not real melted chocolate, which is not always a bad thing but in this case, it resulted in a ‘hollow’ ice chocolate. If I had to compare with the ice chocolate from Lindt Cafe, well, there is no competition!

My
Baci (chocolate and hazelnut) milkshake was pleasantly sweet without being too sickly. Not as rich as I normally liked but a vast improvement to the Ice Chocolate.

The churros here are sprinkled in icing sugar. In fact the whole plate was heavily doused in it. There was no doughnut coating of sugar and cinnamon, which made the churro a little tasteless and devoid of sweetness. Obviously for some this will not be a concern as there are the irresistible pots of chocolate to contend with!

Since we ordered the churros to share we get a choice of two pots of chocolate: milk, dark, white chocolate or dulce de leche caramel. Mr S. likes it all dark but I wanted the best of both worlds so I ordered the milk chocolate as well.

The chocolate was gloriously smooth and glossy and I swear I could hear angels sing as I bit down on the doughnut and chocolate. I could eat this forever and it’d be worth the weight gains and skyrocketing cholesterol levels!

Ok I know I've been assaulting you with never-ending images of churros but too bad, here's one more for you to salivate over!

The milk chocolate was a bit of a let down – very sweet, unlike the bittersweet richness of the dark. Mr S. commented on its similarity to melted Cadbury chocolate or ‘fake’ chocolate as he delicately put it. I much preferred the dark chocolate as you could see from the photos!

Currently San Churro has a
Valentines Day special for couples available from 7th to 14th of February. For $29 you'll receive a chocolate tapas (a selection of chocolates and churros to share), your choice of any two beverages and a box of 4 truffles in a ‘love box’. A great deal seeing as I paid around the same price for churros and two drinks and something to consider in my plans for Valentines Day with Mr S. But ssshh…don’t tell!

I love San Churro in Glebe, I've been there a few times now! Last time we got the kids churros and dipped them in sprinkles. It was rather exciting. Why should kids have all the fun :)

Helen (AugustusGloop)

ooh churros and chocolate is definitely one of life's greatest pleasures :) i prefer the dark chocolate pots too which are less sweet and more cocoa-y!

FFichiban

Ooohh I agree some of their drinks are just too sweet without the richness :( but San Churro is still good to get a fix of those churros! Love the chocolate comparison shot ^^! I still have to post my visit from last year haha -__-

Belle

Haha, I like your Valentine's plan. I may have to do the same as it's too late to book much else.

Lorraine @NotQuiteNigella

OOh we did their Valentines Day special last year. It was pretty good although I have to say that their hot chocolate was terrible (much like the iced chocolate that you described)

Karen

Hi Lisa - Exactly :) I think I might go the way of the sprinkles next too!

Hi Helen - Couldn't agree more :)

Hi FFichiban - haha like I said it's always nicer to eat churros when you don't have to make it yourself!

Hi Belle - I thought it would be too late too but I was already thinking of a day of chocolate just for something a little different than a dinner :)

Hi Lorraine - That's it I remember reading that :) I think I'll stay away from the hot/ice chocolates from now on!

Teresa

mmm chocolate goodness!!! yumyumyuym!

I love their spanish hot chocolates. But I can never finish them! Too thick!

Rosa in Brooklyn

Oh my...donuts and chocolate! This would get me on a treadmill double time but it'd be so worth it!

Karen

Hi Teresa - I agree, too much chocolate is actually not a good thing!

Hi Rosa - It'd be worth the sky rocketing cholesterol!
