Lowenbrau Keller

February 24, 2009

With the We Love Sydney food and wine deals that have been ongoing for some months now (ending Feb 28th), there has never been a better time to go out and eat. One of the better deals have been the buy-one-main-get-one-free at Löwenbräu Keller and Bavarian Bier Cafe, which means I can satisfy my love of Bavarian cuisine for half the price!

As Helen from
grabyourfork mentioned recently there’s a particular lustful glint in chocolatesuze’s eye whenever she thinks about Löwenbräu’s pork knuckle. For a while prior to this sunny Thursday, we both have been aching to catch up over a pork knuckle but have never gotten around to it…until now.

Isn’t she a thing of beauty?

After a week of cold and rain, Suze and I didn’t want to waste this sunny day sitting indoors so I braved the flimsy outdoor chairs to enjoy the sunshine. We didn’t even need to look at the menu! We wanted the
Schweinshaxn…and quickly!

As an aside I can’t help but cringe at the bosom-heaving German wench costumes that the poor waitresses have to wear. Our particular waitress didn’t look too happy about it either! I know it’s part of the touristy novelty of Lowenbrau but still….

Our mouthwatering pork knuckles arrived in no time with mine sporting a nice crusty layer of salt on my crackle. To help wash our meals down Suze orders her
Franziskaner mango weizen (mango beer) and I – being a non-drinker – wanted a ridiculously large glass of Coke. The waitress hands me a pint but I really should’ve ordered a stein! It was so darn refreshing on a hot day!

After the photo shoot we arm ourselves and dive right in. Suze deftly wields her knife like a pro and deskirts the knuckle with ease and I do the same. The potato mash is comforting with just the right creamy, buttery texture.

Our pork knuckle dismantling skills are evident!

The pork was a little dry and unlike
Helen, we were missing the mustard accompaniments! But the crackling is what the Schweinshaxn is all about and it doesn’t disappoint. A bite of the salty crackling washed down with a sip of refreshing, fizzy coke epitomises the immense joy of eating!

Pure crackling joy

We both aren’t a fan of sauerkraut but I admit a little bit of the fermented cabbage, salty pork and creamy mash in one mouthful is pure bliss. I’m just glad that Mr S. isn’t here to see all that precious sauerkraut go to waste! Maybe next time I should doggy bag it for him?

Suze’s Schweinshaxn carnage

The
We Love Sydney deals ends this Saturday 28th of February so enjoy some good value Bavarian delights while you still can! Who knows maybe you’ll see me or pork knuckle afficionado chocolatesuze there. (She’s already had two in five days!)

i am looking at the pork knuckle, and then the “anus” chocolate on the right is calling me to “eat me”! Too distracting! I can never take you seriously anymore!
